There are a ton of sensors in and around the engine and one of them could be setting off the drivetrain malfunction message.

Got this message during a track session drivetrain malfunction. With out faults to go off this would be really hard to say if bad fuel could do it. I've only had my car for a couple months and the mileage is about 1700.

It comes up when my car is warmed up completely and immediately after i take a corner. My 2012 bmw 650i with 36,000 miles has been at the dealer for more than 3 weeks for the dreaded drivetrain malfunction (dtm). Bmw cca tsa 16 bmw m3 o8 bmw x5 15 328xi (wife's car). I have had this happen 3 times now in the last week, and the car went into limp mode this morning.
